Sketetal System Flashcards
What is ossification
When osteoblasts harden. Calcium and phosphates form crystals which help to harden bone as well.
What are osteoblasts?
Cells that produce bone.
What are osteoblasts called after ossification?
Osteocytes
What are the 5 functions of bones?
- Support
- Protection
- Leverage
- Storage
- Blood cell formation.
What two hormones communicate with bone.
Calcitonin and parathyroid hormone. Controls calcium.
Calc - prevents high
Para - prevents low
What is cancellous bone?
Found typically at the end of bones. Spicules found random places throughout bone. Helps keep bone light and durable to outside forces.
What is compact bone?
The lining of bones. Very heavy and dense.
What is the periosteum?
Lines compact bone. Responsible for osteoblasts. Fibrous on the outside.
What is the endosteum?
Lines hollow interior surfaces. Contains osteoblasts.
What are osteoclasts?
Cells that destroy bone to make room for new bone.
What are volkmann’s canals ?
Right angled channels that contain arteries and veins.
What are haversian systems?
Cylindrical bone structures found in compact bone. Contains blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerves.
