TIssues Flashcards
There are 6 different types of epithelial tissues. What are they?
- Simple squamous
- Stratified squamous
- Simple columnar
- Pseudo-stratified columnar
- Simple cuboidal
- Transitional
What are the functions/locations of the simple squamous epithelium?
Function: Diffusion and smooth lining
Locations: Lungs, heart, and blood vessles
What are the functions/locations of the stratified squamous epithelium?
Function: Resists abrasion, infection and water loss
Location: Epidermis, oral cavity and vagina
If the tissue is exposed to the environment, what kind will it be?
Stratified
What are the functions/locations of the simple cuboidal epithelium?
Function: absorption and secretion
Location: Glands, glandular organs, kidneys, sweat ducts and the liver
What are the functions/locations of the simple columnar epithelium?
Function: absorption and secretion
Location: Stomach to intestines
What are the functions/locations of the pseudo-stratified epithelium?
Function: secretion of mucus and traps dust
Location: Respiratory passages
What are the functions/locations of the transitional epithelium?
Function: Allows for stretching
Location: urinary bladder, ureter and proximal urethra
What are the functions/locations of smooth muscle?
Function: sustained contraction
Location: Digestive, respiratory tract and blood vessels
