Tissues Flashcards
What are the different types of tissue?
epithelial, muscle, connective, nervous
What is the definition of a tissue?
A group of similar cells working together for a common function.
Where is epithelial tissue found?
Lining tissue, covers the surface of organs, cavities and tubes
What are some features of epithelial tissue?
Cells packed closely together
No blood vessels (but may have nerve endings)
Cells sit on basement membrane
What are the 5 types of epithelial tissue?
squamous, cuboidal, columnar, ciliated columnar, glandular
What is the structure of squamous tissue?
Flattened cells on a basement membrane
What is the function of squamous tissue?
lining tissue
covers the surface of organs, cavities and tubules
thin layer of cells for exchange
Where is squamous tissue located in the body?
walls of alveoli
blood vessels
lining of renal (bowmans) capsule of the nephron
What is the structure of cuboidal tissue?
cells have cube shape
tissue is one cell thick
What is the function of cuboidal tissue?
secretion and reabsorption
Where is cuboidal tissue located in the body?
kidney tubules
glandular ducts, eg saltatory glands
What is the structure of columnar tissue?
cells are elongated, column shaped
some have microvilli
What is the function of columnar tissue?
Microvilli increase surface are for absorption
Where is columnar tissue found in the body?
small intestine
What is the structure of ciliated columnar tissue?
cells are elongated, column shaped
cells have cilia
What is the function of ciliated columnar tissue?
The cilia waft to move dust and dirt out of air passage
Where is ciliated cuboidal tissue found in the body?
trachea
bronchi
fallopian tubes
What is the structure of glandular tissue?
secretory epithelial cells, secrete substances and organise themselves into gland shapes
What is the function of glandular tissue?
secrete hormones, saliva and mucus
Where is glandular tissue found in the body?
salivatory glands, pancreas
What are some features of muscle tissue?
they can contract
inside the cells are protein fibres made of actin and myosin
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle
What is the structure of skeletal muscle?
attached to bones
muscle cells are joined together to form fibres
the stripes are caused by overlapping protein molecules
voluntary
What is the function of skeletal muscle?
moves bones
maintains posture and body position
supports soft tissue
