Tissues Flashcards
Are collections of cells and cell products that perform specific, limited functions
tissues
Four types of tissue
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Muscle tissue
- Neural tissue
Epithelial cell arrangements and locations
Location- body surface, cavities and hollow organs, tubes, secretory glands. (internal and external surfaces)
Cell arrangements and shapes- variable layer, cell flattened (squamous), cuboidal, or columnar
Connective tissue locations and cell arrangements
Locations- supports skin and other organs, cartilage, bone, and blood
cell arrangements cells not in layers, randomly scattered, irregular to round
Muscle locations and cell arrangements and shapes
locations- skeletal muscles, hollow organs and tubes (urinary bladders)
Cell arrangements/shapes- cells linked in sheets or elongated bundles, thin cylinders, heart muscle cells may be branched.
Nerve locations and cell arrangements/shapes
locations- BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD
cell arrangements/ shapes- cells isolated or networked, highly branched/elongated
Structural classification of epithelia
- cover surfaces or line hollow
organs & tubes - Secretory epithelia
synthesize and release
substances
Histologically classified by
layers and cell shapes of epithelia
– Layers: simple & stratified
– Shapes: squamous,
cuboidal, & columnar
The five categories of epithelia
exchange, transporting, ciliated, protective, secretory
pores that permit easy passage of molecules
Exchange epithelia
tight junctions prevent movement between cells, surface area increased by microvili
Transporting epithelia
one side covered with cilia to move fluid across the surface
ciliated epithelia
cells tightly connected by desmosomes
Protective epithelial
protein-secreting cells filled with membrane-bound secretory granules and extensive RER
secretory epithelia
