Tissues Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A collection of cells bonded together to serve a specific purpose
What is an organ?
A collection of two or more tissues working to serve one or more functions in the body
What are the four main types of tissue in the human body?
nervous, muscular, epithelial, and connective
Which type of tissue makes up the nervous system?
nervous tissue
What is the structure of nervous tissue that has a cell body, dendrites, and an axon?
neuron
Your nervous system contains your _______, your spinal cord, your _________________, and your peripheral nervous system
brain, central nervous system (CNS)
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
smooth, skeletal, and cardiac
Where is the only place you’ll find cardiac muscle?
the heart
What type of muscle tissue are the blood vessels made of?
smooth
What type of muscle tissue allows you to move?
skeletal
What are the stripes that we can seen in skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue called?
striations
Which type of muscle tissue looks clean, organized, and has striations when looked at under a microscope?
skeletal
Which type of muscle tissue has no striations and looks like a bunch of football-shaped cells connected together?
smooth
Which type of tissue covers and protects the body?
epithelial tissue
Which type of tissue supports and binds the body?
connective tissue
What are the four types of connective tissue?
proper, cartilage, bone, and blood
What are the three shapes of epithelial tissue?
squamous (“scale”), cuboidal (“cube”), and columnar (“column”)
Does epithelial tissue have its own blood supply?
No. Epithelial tissue is avascular (no blood vessels)
Does connective tissue have its own blood supply?
Yes. Different types of connective tissue have different amounts of vascularity
What is the extracellular matrix of connective tissue?
It is the non-living connective web of fibers that contain the few cells of the tissue together. (think of the Jello dessert with the pieces of fruit inside of it; the matrix is the Jello, the cells are the fruit.
What is the common name we have for the protective barrier of our body made of epithelial cells attached to a web of connective tissue?
skin
Other than protection, what is the role of the cuboidal and columnar epithelial cells?
to produce hormones and materials for the body (like growth hormone, sweat, snot, and saliva)
