Tissues Flashcards
What are tissues?
groups of similar cells with related functions
What are the four primary types of tissues?
epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
epithelial tissue
covers body surface, lines body cavities, forms the active part of glands
functions of epithelial tissue
protection, secretion, excretion, filtration, absorption of nutrients, receipt of sensory information
what are the two forms of epithelial tissue?
simple (one cell layer)
stratified (more than 1 cell layer)
what are the subtypes of epithelial tissue?
squamous, cuboidal, columnar, pseudo-stratified columnar, transitional, glandular
what is squamous epithelial tissue made up of?
flat, thin, plate-like cells
function of simple squamous tissue
lines blood vessels (endothelium), alveoli of lungs, thoracic & abdominal cavities
what are the two types of stratified squamous?
nonkeratinizied; keratinized
function of nonkeratinized stratified squamous tissue
lines the mouth, esophagus, vagina
function of keratinized stratified squamous tissue
makes up the epidermis
what is cuboidal epithelial tissue made up of?
cube-shaped cells
function of simple cuboidal tissue
important in absorption and secretion; forms the active part of glands and small ducts, ovary surface and kidney tubules
function of stratified cuboidal tissue
rare
lines the ducts of sweat, salivary, and mammary glands
what are columnar epithelial tissue made up of?
tall, regular cells
