Tissue Repair Flashcards
What are the three types of tissue in the body?
Labile tissue (continuously dividing)
Stable tissue
Permanent tissue
Why do tissues need to be repaired?
Reconstruct architecture of tissue and restore function
What are the three stages of the tissue repair process?
Inflammation
Organisation
Fibrosis (regeneration)
What are the steps of inflammation in tissue repair?
Macrophages clear up dead material
Clot prevents blood loss
Damaged area isolated
What are the steps of organisation in regards to tissue repair?
Fibroblasts secrete collagen
New capillaries start to form
Micropages remove clot
Granulation tissue develops
What are the steps of regeneration regarding tissue repair?
Surface epithelium regenerates
Scab falls off
Collagen fibres mature
Scar becomes pale
What is first intention healing?
Occurs in wounds that close easily and regeneration is faster than fibrosis formation
What does granulation tissue do?
Replace lost tissue volume
Template for scar tissue
What characterises second intention healing?
Occurs in large wounds and where fibrosis formation Is faster than epithelial regeneration
Contains more granulated tissue
What is contracture?
Scars shrink and expand sporadically causing functional and cosmetic problems
What is a keloid scar?
Excess formation of collagen in a wound
Appears to be inherited
What are the clinical features of non healing wounds?
Presence of necrotic tissue
Lack of blood supply
Failure of epithelial regeneration
Reoccurring wound breakdown
What factors impair tissue regeneration?
Infection
Poor blood supply
Excess movement
Ionising radiation
What are cellular responses to tissue regeneration?
Cell proliferation
Migration
differentiation
