Tissue Descriptions Flashcards
Epithileal tissue
Covers the body’s external and internal surfaces
Connective tissue
Bind and support parts of the body
Muscle tissue
Make movement possible
Nervous tissue
Conduct impulses from one part of the body to another & help control & coordinate body activities
Simple squamous epithelium
Single layer; flattened cells
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Single layer; cube-shaped cells
Simple columnar epithelium
Single layer; elongated narrow cells; some ciliates
Pseudostratified columnar
Single layer; elongated cells; some cells do not reach free surface; often ciliated
Stratified squamous epithelium (nonkeratinized)
Many layers; surface cells flattened and remain alive
Stratified squamous epithelium (keratinized)
Many layers; surface cells dead and keratinized
Stratified cuboidal epithelium
2-3 layers; cube-shaped cells
Stratified columnar epithelium
Superficial layer of elongated cells; basal layers of cube-shaped cells
Transitional epithelium
Many layers; cube-shaped and elongated cells; thinner layers when stretched
Glandular epithelium
Unicellular or multicellular
