Tissue Flashcards
1
Q
what are tissues?
A
- A group of cells that are similar in structure & work together to carry out a particular task.
- The structure or function of the tissue allows it to be classified into one of four types.
2
Q
- Epithelial Tissue
A
- Covering or lining tissue
- Examples:
- Outer lining of skin
- Outer epithelium of organs (lungs, heart, kidneys, intestines, liver)
- Inner lining of heart, stomach & intestines - Cells are very closely joined together.
- Vary in shape from thin/flat to column-shaped to cube-shaped depending on tissue.
3
Q
- Nervous tissue
A
- Made up specialised nerve cells = neurons
- Have long projections from the body of the cell
- When stimulated, messages are carried along these projections to another part of the body.
- This can be found in the brain, spinal cord & nerves
4
Q
- Muscular tissue
A
- Cells of muscular tissue = muscle fibres
- These are long & thin and contract to become shorter
- Voluntary muscle = muscle you can consciously control so you an move when necessary (eg: biceps & triceps of your arm)
- Involuntary muscle = muscle not under our conscious control (eg: muscles that line intestinal tract)
- Striated muscle = muscle made up of dark and light bands making a striped appearance
-Three types of muscle tissue: - Skeletal muscle = muscles that are attached to bones
- Voluntary & striated - Smooth muscle = found in walls of internal organs
- Involuntary & non-striated - Cardiac muscle = muscle that makes up most of the heart, contracts to pump blood around
- Involuntary
5
Q
- Connective tissue
A
- Provides support for the body & helps hold all body parts together.
- Cells are not close together.
- Separated by large amount of material not made up of cells
- Non cellular material = matrix - This includes bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments & fat storage (adipose tissue)
