Tissue Flashcards
What is tissue
A group of cells that are similar in structure and work together to perform a specific function
What are the basic types of tissues
-Epithelial
-Connective
-Muscle
-Nervous
What does epithelial tissue do
It forms the linings, coverings, and glandular tissue of the body
What are the functions of epithelial tissue
-protection
-absorption
-filtration
-secretion
What are the subtypes of simple epithelium (one layer)
-simple squamous
-simple cuboidal
-simple columnar
-pseudostratified columnar
What are the subtypes of stratified epithelium (multilayer)
-stratified squamous
-transitional
What is connective tissue
It is tissue that connects
What are the types of connective tissue
Loose connective tissue: adipose (fat)
Dense connective tissue: cartilage and bone
Vascular tissue: erythrocytes (red blood cells) - carry oxygen
-leucocytes - white blood cells (part of immune system)
-Platelets (clotting)
What does muscle tissue do
It contracts and causes movement
What are subtypes of muscle tissue
Skeletal muscle (voluntary muscle; e.g., large muscle of the body)
Cardiac muscle (involuntary muscle)
Smooth muscle (involuntary muscle; e.g., small intestine)
Describe nervous tissue
It contains neurons that send and receive electric signals in the body
Nervous tissue responds to stimuli and transmits impulses with supporting cells
It makes up the brain, spinal cord, and nerves
What is loose connective tissue
adipose (fat)
What is dense connective tissue
Cartilage and bone
What is vascular tissue
Erythrocytes (red blood cells) - carry oxygen
Leucocytes - white blood cells (part of immune system)
-Platelets (clotting)
