Algernon is a conceited narcissist whose hedonistic lifestyle steps on others.

[Food]

A

Cucumber Sandwiches
Algernon is seen constantly eating and gorging himself on cucumber sandwiches symbolising how lust and pleasure are frowned upon in polite society but those in power can flaunt these values.

The cucumber sandwiches are the motif of the hedonism of the rich and Algernon views eating as a form of social, even sexual presumption - food may substitue as sex, and Algernon’s insatiable appetite and wontonly indulging himself suggests other forms of self-indulgence. Think of Cecily, he only “adores” her and his persuit of her is a game of pleasure (wearing a Bunbury suit).

The fight over the muffins is the two characters fighting for dominance in a restricted, polite space. “One shouldn’t eat muffins in an agitated manner”.
