6
Q

What does capacitation involve?

A

Secretions within the female reproductive system capacitate the sperm, getting it ready for fertilisation by changing the chemical structure of the head of the sperm.

11
Q

How does the sperm penetrate the zona pellucida?

A

Acrosome reaction - The acrosome (in head of sperm) releases degrative enzymes that break down the zona pellucida. This allows sperm to penetrate and the head of sperm (containing genetic information) makes its way into oocyte.

12
Q

What is purpose of cortical reaction? When does it occur?

A

Occurs after sperm penetration (after zygote forms). This make the zona pellucida impenetrable, preventing another sperm from fertilising the egg.

13
Q

After this fertilisation, what occurs?

A

Cleavage - zygote cells divide rapidly

14
Q

What changes in size does the zygote undergo?

A

No change in size despite rapid division - blastomeres get smaller, zona pellucida keeps it same size

16
Q

What does morula consist of?

A

16-32 cells

  • inner cell mass: embryoblasts
  • outer cell mass: trophoblasts
17
Q

What do embryoblasts go on to form?

A

The baby

18
Q

What do trophoblasts go on to form?

A

Support structures e.g. placenta

19
Q

What is formed following the morula?

A

Blastocyst

20
Q

What does blastocyst consist of?

A

Formation of fluid filled cavity - morula takes in fluid, forming a cyst

21
Q

What day is the blastocyst formed?

A

Day 5

22
Q

What day does implantation occur?

A

Days 5 and 6

23
Q

Where does implantation occur?

A

Uterine wall

24
Q

What happens to the zona pellucida just before implantation?

A

It comes off
