What are the two different ways of dating a pregnancy?
- Fertilisation Age
2. Menstrual Age
When does the menstrual age date from and how many weeks it it?
Dates pregnancy from last menstrual period. 40 weeks with 3 equal trimesters
When does fertilisation age date from and how many weeks is it?
Dates from day of fertilisation. Is 38 weeks with 3 unequal time periods
Why is there a difference in weeks between these two methods of dating a pregnancy?
40 weeks of the menstrual age accounts for first 2 weeks of menstrual cycle where a woman cannot conceive
What are the 3 time periods of fertilisation age?
- Early development (ED)
- Embryonic period (E) (organogenesis)
- Foetal period (F)
What happens during ED?
Rapid cell division, pre-embryonic
What happens during E?
Roughly between weeks 3-8 when most of the organs&systems are developed
What happens during F?
Systems grow and mature
What molecule is tested for during pregnancy tests?
hCG
