How do the time use diaries relate to the sample?
H&H used for each member of a family and asked to record parenting behaviours
Why is the 8 day time use diary an issue?
Only a snapshot of interactions on sampling - should ask to complete over a longer period of time
What were time use diaries used for
Basis for SS interviews to foster discussion and clarify entries
Why is it important not to confer?
To give an accurate account of activities and interactions undertaken and the time taken
How could data be cross checked for accuracy?
By having three diaries from each family, follow up in the interviews
Why should diaries be completed ASAP after interactions?
To ensure that the account is accurate - if their memory distorts the data then validity can be questioned
Socially desirable interactions & activities - what could they affect
Could be given to present selves in the best possible light
Reliability of the data
How can it be made sure that socially desirable answers have not been given?
Comparing entries from three diaries and clarification in the interview
Are time use diaries valid or reliable?
Can be valid
Not reliable as another researcher using the same method is unlikely to get the same or similar results
Why aren’t time use diaries reliable?
Interactions and activities documented will vary
