Introduction Flashcards
What are qualitative methods?
Detailed and in-depth methods of research favoured by interpretivists e.g time use diaries and semi-structured interviews using mostly open questions to allow H&H to prove fathering interactions
Mixed methods
More than one research method e.g time use diaries and semi-structured interviews
Type of data that mixed/qualitative methods bring
Can generate the same but often used to generate different types of data e.g qualitative and quantitative
Closed questionnaire and open interview
Why is it likely that the interviews consisted of mostly open questions?
Because H&H research focused on qualitative methodology
Semi-structured interviews
A mix of open and closed questions (mostly open) to get qualitative data favoured by interpretivists
Can semi-structured interviews be valid/reliable?
Can be high in validity but aren’t reliable as another researcher using the same method is unlikely to get the same/similar results
What data did the time use diaries collect?
Some quantitative but mostly qualitative data
Research issue
Fathering (however it is worded in the question)
What is mixed methods also known as?
Methodological pluralism
What does methodological pluralism do?
It gives a fuller picture of the research issue.
What is triangulation?
Using mixed methods is also a form of triangulation
Cross checking the data for reliability and validity
