Precambrian
The first time before 4000 MA
Archean Eon
4000-2500 MA. Occurs after the Precambrian
Proterozoic Eon
2500-541 MA. Occurs after the Archean and before the Phanerozoic Eon
Phanerozoic Eon
542 MA to today. It occurs after the Proterozoic Eon. It contains the Paleozoic (542-251 ma), Mesozoic (251-65.5), and Cenozoic Eras (65.5-0).
Paleozoic Era
542-251 MA. Consists of the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian Periods.
Cambrian Period
The first period in the Paleozoic. Occurs before the Ordovician.
Ordovician Period
The second period in the Paleozoic. Occurs after the Cambrian and before the Silurian.
Silurian Period
The third period of the Paleozoic Era (541-252 MA). Occurs after the Ordovician and before the Devonian.
Devonian Period
The fourth period of the Paleozoic Era. Occurs after the Silurian and before the Carboniferous.
Carboniferous Period
The fifth period of the Paleozoic Era. Occurs after the Devonian and before the Permian. Consists of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian.
Permian Period
The sixth and final period in the Paleozoic Era. Occurs after the Carboniferous Period.
Mesozoic Era
The second Era in the Phanerozoic Eon. After the Paleozoic and before the Cenozoic. Consists of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods.
Triassic Period
The first of the periods in the Mesozoic Era. Preceeds the Jurassic.
Jurassic Period
The second period within the Mesozoic Era. Follows the Triassic and occurs before the Cretaceous.
Cenozoic Era
66-0 MA Occurs after the Mesozoic Era in the Phanerozoic Eon. It consists of the Paleogene, Neogene, and Quaternary periods.
