Time of Death (ToD) Flashcards
Entomology
study of insects
Algor mortis
The cooling of the body after death
Liver mortis
The settling of blood at the lower position of the body, causing discolouration in the skin
Rigor Mortis
Chemical changes in the muscle of the deceased that cause the limbs of the corpse to stiffen
Fluorescence
The emission of radiation by a substance ( usually visible light) during exposure to external radiation such as x-rays or light
Mummification
When a body is turned into a mummy by process of embalming and/or drying
Putrefaction
The anaerobic (w/o oxygen) decomposition of organic matter by bacteria or fungi that results in an extremely odorous product
Antibodies
The Immunoglobulins produced in response to foreign substances in the blood that identify and neutralise them.
Antigens
a trigger that tells the body whether a foreign substance is harmful or not. They are present on the surface of red blood cells.
Blood Splatter Analysis
The use of blood distribution to determine how the event was committed
Blood typing
The process of determining a person’s blood group by testing their blood
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells that contain hemoglobin
High-velocity splatter
A splatter pattern caused by a high pressure/ energy event
Kastle Meyer Test
Testing for Blood using phenolphthalein (Acid-base indicator that turns light pink)
Low-Velocity splatter
A splatter pattern caused by a low energy event (ex: blood dripping)
