Atomic Structure + Spectroscopy Flashcards
Absorption spectroscopy
Spectroscopic techniques that measure the absorption of radiation through functions of frequency or wavelengths
Bulk Composition
The main component/ substance of an object.
Electromagnetic radiation
The radiation of visible light, radiowaves, gamma rays and x-rays, where electric and magnetic waves vary at the same time
Emission spectroscopy
Spectroscopic techniques that measure the electromagnetic radiation emitted when electrons drop from a higher energy level to a lower energy
Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX)
Analytical technique used for elemental analysis or chemical characterisation of a sample
Energy Level
Energy of a quantum state of a system
Gamma ray
A type of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the radioactive decay of a nucleus of an atom
Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA)
A method used to determine the chemical elements by radiating it with neutrons to produce radioactive atoms whose emissions indicate the present elements
ppb / ppm
One in a billion ( part per billion) / one in a million (part per million)
Relative abundance
The amount of an element present in an environment in comparison to all other elements
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
An electron microscope that produces images of a sample by scanning it with a focused beam of electrons
Trace Impurities
What a small portion of an object is made up of
Chromatography
A method of separating a mixture into it’s components
Infrared (IR) spectroscopy
An analysis of infrared light reacting with a molecule
Mass Spectrometry (MS)
A machine that identifies the chemical constitute of a substance by separating gaseous ions according to their different mass and charge
