17
Q

Why do we need manufactured timbers?

A

The size of the tree trunk, is sometimes to small.

18
Q

Name two types of manufactured timber?

A

Plywood, MDF and Chipboard.

19
Q

What is Plywood?

A

Plywood is an engineered wood made from glued wood veneers.

20
Q

What is MDF?

A

MDF is an engineered wood product made from wood dust and fibers mixed with glue and pressed into flat sheets under extreme heat.

21
Q

What is Chipboard?

A

Chipboard is an engineered wood made from compressed wood chips and glue.

22
Q

Give 3 Physical characteristics of timber?

A

Timbers have similar physical characteristics such as knots, grain, working properties.

23
Q

What are knots?

A

A knot appears where a branch grew out of a tree. Knots sometimes fall out leaving a hole, so its better to use timbers without knots.

24
Q

Give examples of different colours of timbers?

A

Pine is a very pale colour.
Mahogany is dark red / brown.

25
Q

What is grain?

A

The Grain is the fibre that runs the lenght of a tree trunk and makes it attractive.

26
Q

Give examples of working properties of timber?

A

Elasticity, Tensile strenght, compressive strenght.

27
Q

What is Tensile Strenght?

A

The amount of force the timber can withstand when being pulled / stretched.

28
Q

What are ecological concerns regarding timber.

A

Sustainability of timber, so you cut a tree, then you have to replant it.

29
Q

What is the impact of logging on communities?

A

In the Amazon rain forest, logging endangeres traditional way of life by locals and the wildlife.

30
Q

What is the recycling problem with manufactured timber?

A

Because it has glue in it and plastic, its not biodegradable, and cannot rot in time.

31
Q

What is deforestation?

A

Deforestation is a global problem with trees being cut down, faster than they grow. It causes problems such as soil erosion, landslides, green house effect becomes worse, it destroyes habitats and wildlife.
