Timbers Flashcards
Where do Timbers come from?
Timber is the wood that comes from trees trunks, and thats has been dried and cut into usable planks or boards.
What is a Hardwood?
A hardwood comes from a tree with broad leaves, and its seed are in a fruit, many hardwoods are deciduous.
What is a deciduous tree?
They are trees that losses its leaves in the winter.
Where can I find a lot of hardwood trees?
We can find them in England
Give 3 examples of hardwood?
Oak, Mahogany, Balsa Beech
Name 2 types of natural timbers?
Hardwood, and Softwood
What is the definition of grain in Timbers?
In timber, grain refers to the wood fiber giving the wood a special look and strenght.
Give two advantages of using hardwoods?
They are strong, durable.
Give two disandvantages of using hardwood?
They are expensive and hard to find.
What are softwoods?
A softwood is a tree with neddles and seeds in a cone.
What is the meaning of evergreen?
An evergreen tree is a tree that dosent loses its needles / leaves.
How long does it take for a softwood tree to grow?
30 years
How long does it take for a hardwood tree to grow?
100 years
Give 2 advantages of using softwoods?
Its durable, and quite cheap.
Give 2 disadvantages of softwoods?
Its can warp and crack easily.
Give two examples of softwoods?
Pine and Cedar.
Why do we need manufactured timbers?
The size of the tree trunk, is sometimes to small.
Name two types of manufactured timber?
Plywood, MDF and Chipboard.
What is Plywood?
Plywood is an engineered wood made from glued wood veneers.
What is MDF?
MDF is an engineered wood product made from wood dust and fibers mixed with glue and pressed into flat sheets under extreme heat.
What is Chipboard?
Chipboard is an engineered wood made from compressed wood chips and glue.
Give 3 Physical characteristics of timber?
Timbers have similar physical characteristics such as knots, grain, working properties.
What are knots?
A knot appears where a branch grew out of a tree. Knots sometimes fall out leaving a hole, so its better to use timbers without knots.
Give examples of different colours of timbers?
Pine is a very pale colour.
Mahogany is dark red / brown.
What is grain?
The Grain is the fibre that runs the lenght of a tree trunk and makes it attractive.
Give examples of working properties of timber?
Elasticity, Tensile strenght, compressive strenght.
What is Tensile Strenght?
The amount of force the timber can withstand when being pulled / stretched.
What are ecological concerns regarding timber.
Sustainability of timber, so you cut a tree, then you have to replant it.
What is the impact of logging on communities?
In the Amazon rain forest, logging endangeres traditional way of life by locals and the wildlife.
What is the recycling problem with manufactured timber?
Because it has glue in it and plastic, its not biodegradable, and cannot rot in time.
What is deforestation?
Deforestation is a global problem with trees being cut down, faster than they grow. It causes problems such as soil erosion, landslides, green house effect becomes worse, it destroyes habitats and wildlife.
