Splits
A
Splits are cracks through the wood piece, and it is usually found at the ends

Check
A
Check is similar to the splits but they are cracks along the growth ring, and do not pass through the thickness of the wood.

Warping
A
Warping is a term used to categorise any wood that has a defect of a curved surface and these occur during after weathering. Some examples are bow, spring and cup.

Shakes
A
This defect called ‘shakes’ are the gaps between growth rings, they often are gaps across the face but sometimes under its surface.

Bowing
A
Bowing is a warp on the surface of the board from one end to the other.

A
