Structure and Purpose Flashcards
Sapwood
The new wood under the Cambium layer is called the sapwood, which is light in colour than heartwood; it works as a pipe for the water to move up the tree.
Heartwood
The heartwood is actually made of dead cells but it provides the needed strength to support the tree.
Earlywood
The earlywood is made up of thin walled cells and they deliver water and needed nutrients to the entire body, which keeps the tree growing.
Latewood
The latewood have more strong thickly walled cells than the earlywood because it is exposed and influenced by cold or dry temperatures.
Cambium Layer
Cambium layer is a thin layer that provides new cells, which later becomes xylem, phloem and cambium. It is the main source, which makes the tree, including trunk, branches and roots, grow larger in diameter.
Growth Ring
The growth rings mark the yearly growth of the tree, and therefore are used to find its age by counting its rings.
Pith
In the centre of a tree is the pith, it is quite soft and mushy, and this part is the oldest part of the tree and the core.
Xylem
Most plants have xylem, which carries water and mineral salts passing from the roots to the leaves.
Phloem
This is where the food for the tree travels through to send to the rest of the tree.
Bark
Bark covers the tree except for the leaves, it works like an armour of protection, from many things like insects, disease, storms, extreme temperatures and fire.
