Timber Manufacturing Flashcards
What are examples of timber manufacturing?
Routing, Turning, Laminating, Steam Bending and Kerfing
Router
Can be used to shape, cut and create designs in wood. Different cutting tools can be used that have different profiles.
Turning
Pieces of timber are rotated and cutting tools are then used to shape the material.
Laminating
Thin strip of wood are glued together in a former.
It is often used to create curved shapes and famously used in furniture design, including Marcel Breuer and Ikea!
Steam Bending
Thicker pieces of timber can be bent if they are steamed first. The steam penetrates the timber fibres and temporarily softens them, allowing them to be formed.
Kerfing
Adding thin saw cuts into a thicker material, you can make it flexible, enabling you to make curved shapes, like the sides of a guitar.
