Health and Safety Flashcards
What is ‘Health & Safety’?
You need to think about safety when using different tools and equipment. This is important for your own safety but also for the safety of the people around you.
What is PPE?
This stands for “Personal protective equipment”. This equipment must be worn when recommended.
What are some examples of PPE?
- safety goggles
- gloves
- ear protectors
- apron
- mask
What should you do when working with tools & machinery?
● Never leave machinery unattended while switched on.
● Never use a machine or hand tool unless you have been shown how to.
● Use guards on machines that have them.
● Use a dust extractor of the process produces dust.
● Carry and store sharp tool safely.
● Know how to turn off an machine in a emergency.
● When working with machinery make sure: Sleeves are rolled back, ties are tucked in or took off, necklaces etc taken off and long hair tied back.
● Always secure work safety - e.g. clamp work before cutting.
What is a risk assesment?
A document used to identify and minimise any risks when working.
What are some examples of hazard areas that are typically included in a risk assessment?
● Hot items and liquid
● Electrical risks
● Bright flashes
● Sharp items
● Flying debris
● Entrapment in moving parts
● Loud noises
● Tripping or slipping work at heights
● Work at heights
● Toxic substances
● Vibrations
How do you handle materials and waste sensibly?
- Dispose of waste properly so that it doesn’t harm the environment.
- Make sure materials are safe to handle - file down rough edges, let pieces cool down.
- When storing materials do so safety i.e. so they can’ fall.
- When using toxic chemicals i.e. solvents make sure there is adequate ventilation to avoid inhalation of vapours.
- Keep flammable liquids away from naked flames.
Identify 3 potential hazards when soldering resistors onto the circuit board
(3 marks)
● Breathing in the fumes
● Burns from the soldering iron or solder
● Electrical risk from accidentally burning the cable
● Cutting yourself on sharp exposed wires
● Damaging posture if not at correct working height.
