Define hematemesis
Emesis containing blood (throwing up blood); may result from bleeding into the lumen of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum proximal to the ligament of Treitz
Common causes of hematemesis
Duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, or esophageal varices
