Choudhury - Secretory Function of GI Tract: Pancreas Flashcards
Two most important things we need to know for the exam regarding the pancreas’ secretory functions:
Secretin and “the CCK”
CCK stimulates secretion of what chemical?
Pancreatic juices
Secretin releases?
Bicarbonate
What do the Islets of Langerhans produce?
α (A) cells (20%) - Glucagon
β (B) cells (70%) - Insulin (amylin)
d (D) cells (5%) - Somastotatin
pp cells (5%) - Pancreatic polypeptide
Concentration of pancreatic secretions?
Isotonic
Acinar cells secrete?
Pancreatic “juices”
Ductal cells secrete?
Bicarb
Pancreatic secretions?
Pancreatic secretion is opposite to stomach. Produces 2 – 3 L of bicarbonate
Secretin
Secretin generates electrical gradient that favors NaHCO3 co-transport (bicarb release)
If you have a duodenal ulcer…most likely your secretin will be…?
LOW
Signs of malabsorption and indigestion appears
if pancreatic secretions falls below 10%
