Tides & Currents Flashcards
Mean Range
4.2 to 4.8ft
Diurnal Range
7 to 7.9ft
Tide Rips
Tide rips occur off the prominent points and in vicinity of the banks, at times becoming dangerous to small vessels.
Currents
Currents are complicated due to large daily inequality. Tables should be consulted.
Smith Island
Strong currents set in and around Smith Island, especially on the flood. Deep draft vessels to stay well outside 10 fathom curve to avoid being set into danger.
Discovery Bay Entrance
weak and direction variable
max 1kt on flood
Sequim Bay
Strong currents that tend to follow the channel.
Admiralty to Rosario Straight
Admiralty Inlet to Rosario Straight, current on flood has tendency to set towards Whidbey I.
Deception Pass
Currents in the narrows of Deception Pass attain velocities in excess of 8 kts and cause strong eddies along the shores. W weather, heavy sea and swell, heavy rips form and make it dangerous to small craft.
Unusually High Tides
During periods of unusually high tides, after storms or during a freshet, be cautious of free floating logs, dead heads and sinkers.
