Tides Flashcards
- The general trend
The general trend of the tidal range is to increase in range from N-S in Puget Sound with the smallest tides in Port Townsend and the largest tides in Olympia. This effect exists amongst the tide stations on this chartlet with larger tides at the southern end of the chartlet as compared to the northern stations.
- The mean range of the tide at Olympia
The mean range of the tide at Olympia is 10.5 feet, and the diurnal range of tide is 14.4 feet.
- Free-floating logs
Be cautious of free-floating logs and semi-submerged deadheads or sinkers especially during freshets or after storms or unusually high tides.
- Tidal advisory
VTS will provide tidal advisory broadcast when tides are predicted in excess of 11 ft. When tide exceeds 11.0 ft in Seattle, vessels should proceed at speed that minimizes risk of wake damage.
