Tides Flashcards
Tides
periodic, short-term changes in the height of the ocean surface at a particular place cuased by a combo of grav force of sun, and moon and the motion of Earth
longest of all waves
forced waves - never free of the forces that cause them
become stronger near coast
erode and transport sediment
equilibrium theory of tides
seafloor does not influence tides
ocean conforms constantly to the forces that affect the position of the surface
ocean in balance
would accurately describe a planet uniformly covered in water
moon and earth without declination
moon and earth with declination - moon does not stay directly over equator, changing position of the moon changes the tides (lower lows and higher highs) = low, high, higher high, and low
sun, moon, earth without declination -
inertial force
apparent force that appears in a non-inertial reference frame
i.e. centrifugal force - moon does not fall on Earth
high tide
high-water position corresponding to a tidal crest
low tide
low water position corresponding to tidal trough
lunar tides
24 hrs 50 min
tides caused by grav and inertial interaction of the moon and Earth
solar tides
Tides caused by the gravitational and inertial interaction of the sun and Earth
sun has less effect on tides than moon, so solar bulges are smaller than tidal bulges
solar bulges follow sun throughout the day
astronomical tides
Tides caused by inertia and the gravitational force of the sun and moon
When moon and sun are close to Earth, they have more influence on tides
- This occurs because orbits are ellipses, not perfect circles
spring tides
Occur when Earth, moon, and sun are all in a line
The lunar and solar tides are additive
- Higher high tides and lower low tides
- Spring tides occur at 2-week intervals corresponding to the new and full moons
neap tides
Occur when Earth, moon, and sun form a right angle
The solar tide will tend to diminish the lunar tide
- Because the moon’s contribution is more than twice that of the sun, the solar tide will not completely cancel the lunar tide
- High tides are not very high and low tides not very low
- Neap tides also occur at 2-week intervals, with the neap tide arriving a week after the spring tide
