Tides Flashcards
What causes tides?
The gravitational attraction of the moon
Number of tides a day
2 high tides and 2 low tides everyday, 12 hr and 25 min apart
How do tides work?
Water rises on the side of earth closest to the moon because of the gravitational force, high tide on the opposite side of earth as well since the landmass of earth is also getting pulled towards the moon
Where does the extra water come from?
The water comes from the low tide areas
Where to draw tides on map
High tides are pointing towards the moon and on opposite side of earth, low tides are not in line with the moon
Tidal Friction
water and earth exert frictional forces on each other, causes tides to be in front of moon a little bit
Tidal locking
A celestial body’s orbital period matches its rotational period causing one hemisphere of the body to constantly face the body it’s orbiting (Same side of moon is always pointed towards earth)
Moon’s Orbital Period
27.3 days
