A
- Communist revolutionary who became a founding father of the PRC (People’s Republic of China)
- Was Chairman of the CCP from its establishment in 1949 to his death in 1976
- His theories, military strategies, political policies and interpretation of marxism is known as Maoism (or Maoist Thought)

- The leader of the CCP from ‘78 - ‘89
- After Mao’s death, he reforms China’s market-economy
- Ordered the Tiananmen Square Massacre of ‘89
- The architect of modern China’s system - capitalism with Chinese characteristics’

Who is the Dalai Lama?
A
- Political and spiritual leader of Tibet, in exile since Chinese takeover in ‘59
- Representatives of the Dalai Lama were forced to sign the ‘Seventeen Point Agreement for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet’ which made Tibet part of the PRC
- 14th Dalai Lama, his name is Tenzin Gyatso

What were the factors that led to the fall of the Qing Dynasty?
A
- China was in chaos politically, economically, militarily and socially as they had lost most of their power to imperial, foreign powers
- Political groups emerged, hoping to establish a republic (the nationalist party KMT, founded by Sun Yat-Sen)
- Defeats in the Opium and Sino-Japanese Wars reduced the legitimacy of the Qing Dynasty
- Treaty of Versailles gave a Chinese province to Japan instead of China, resulting in protests in ‘19 over the weakness of their leaders

What was the White Terror and the Long March?
A
- The fragile alliance between the CCP and the KMT, formed to fight against the Japanese, broke when the KMT attacked CCP headquarters
- The CCP embarked on ‘The Long March’, nearly 6000 miles, through snow capped mountains to safety. Thousands of people died, but Mao used propaganda to turn the journey into a triumph of human sacrifice, and the power of the CCP
