Thyroxin Flashcards
What are ectotherms
Thermoconformers that don’t produce heat rather they seek out environments that fit their needs
What are endotherms?
When it’s cold out, they increase metabolic heat production to keep their body temperature constant. Because of this, the internal body temperature of an endotherm is more or less independent of the temperature of the environment.
What is thermogenesis?
Brown adipose tissue , which is packed with iron-rich mitochondria, burns to create heat
How is the baseline metabolic rate of an ectotherm measured?
Standard metabolic rate (SMR)
How does the metabolic rate graph for ectotherms look like?
Positive linear graph
How is the baseline metabolic rate of an endotherm measured?
Basal metabolic rate (BMR)
How does the metabolic rate graph for endotherms look like?
Constant horizontal line
What is T4
Thyroxin
What is T3?
Triiodothyronine
What happens to thyroxin as the body becomes cooler?
Triggers increased thyroxin secretion by the thyroid gland
What happens when thyroxin increases?
Increase in metabolic rate, which increases heat generation, which causes body temperature to rise
