Glucose Homeostasis Flashcards
What does homeostasis depend on?
Negative feedback loops
What is diabetes in terms of homeostasis?
A disease caused by a broken feedback loop involving the hormone insulin
What does insulin do?
decreases the concentration of glucose in the blood by acting as a signal that triggers cells of the body, such as fat and muscle cells, to take up glucose for use as fuel.
What causes glucose to convert into glycogen?
Insulin
What does glucagon do in terms of homeostasis?
increases the concentration of glucose in the blood
What is the function of glucagon?
acts on the liver, causing glycogen to be broken down into glucose and released into the bloodstream, causing blood sugar levels to go back up.
What is type 1 diabetes?
Inability of the pancreas to produce insulin?
What is type 2 diabetes?
Cells of the body become resistant to insulin or insufficient insulin produced by the pancreas
