Thyroid Hormone Flashcards
What does TSH do?
Stimulates thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4
By stimulating follicular cells to take up colloid droplets containing thyroglubulin
What type of hormone are thyroid hormones?
Amino acid derivatives
What does the hypothalamus produce?
TRH (thyroid releasing hormone)
Why does TRH do?
Stimulates the pituitary to release TSH
What type of receptor is the thyroid Hormone receptor
Steroid receptor (nuclear hormone receptor)
What is goitre?
Fat neck due to enlarged thyroid gland
What does thyroid hormone do?
Raises basal metabolic rate
Increases N° adrenergic beta receptors in tissues
Responsible for maturation of bones, lungs and brain in fetus
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism
Weight loss, increased appetite, tremor, heat intolerance (high metabolic rate), restlessness, goitre, tachycardia, AF and hypertension
2 treatments for hyperthyroidism
Surgery to remove thyroid
Carbimazole (inhibits production of thyroid hormones)
Symptoms of hypothyroidism
Tiredness, weight gain, goitre, bradycardia, decreased libido, depression
Treatment for hypothyroidism
Hormone replacement therapy
How does hypothyroidism occur?
Low function of thyroid due to mutant receptor, therefore hormone levels are elevated
-ve feedback
Reduction in TSH production
