Thyroid Gland Case studies Flashcards
What will be seen with primary hyperthyroidism?
Low TRH
Low TSH
High T4/T3–defect @ thyroid
What will be seen with secondary hyperthyroidism?
Low TRH
High TSH–defect @ anterior pituitary
High T4/T3
What are symptoms of hyperthyroidism?
elevated BMR tachycardia sweating heat intolerance nervousness muscle wasting and weakness tremor difficulty sleeping changes in hair growth and skin texture
What causes goiter?
Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins present in circulation causing hypertrophy of thyrocytes
Stimulatory immunoglobulins also continue to stimulate secretion of high amounts of TH by acting directly on TSH receptors int the follicle cells—neg feedback not working
What is exophthalmos?
bulging of the eye anteriorly out of the orbit
What will be seen in primary hypothyroidism?
High TRH
High TSH
Low T4/T3–defect @ thyroid
Weak neg feedback
What will be seen in secondary hypothyroidism?
High TRH
Low TSH–defect @ anterior pituitary
Low T4/T3
Weak neg feedback
What is Hashimoto’s?
autoimmune disorder with production of antithyroid antibodies–gradually destroying the gland
What does dietary iodine deficiency lead to?
hypothyroidism and goiter
What are symptoms of hypothyroidism?
Low BMR cold-intolerance lethargy increased fat deposition hypotension nonpitting edema headache skin changes constipation
