Hypothyroidism: very common especially in aging women
Thyroid nodules: palpable in 4% of adults
Hyperthyroidism: 1/100 women
Graves disease
Thyromegaly and hyperthyroidism
Ophthalmopathy, orbitopathy
dermopathy
graves disease is the result of an autoimmune response which activates TSH receptor on thyroid follicle cells resulting in excess thyroid hormone production
Graves ophthalmopathy
inflammatory response and its sequalae push the eye forward
Generally associated with hyperthyroidism (can occur rarly with hypo or normal (eu))
eye stuff can be laterally induced
eye stuff worsens with smoking
Graves dermopathy
seen often when patient has eye involvement
production of mucopolysaccharides by chodrocities
plumbers nail (onycholysis)
vitiligo
premature graying of hair
Diagnosis of hyperthyroidism
supressed TSH
high T4 and T3
can treat with radioactive iodine, thionamides, surgery, beta blocker for symtom relief
