  • causes can be either acquired or defects in production

hyperthyroidism

  • blocks thyroid hormone production or secretion
  • happens a lot in cats

meds used for thyroid replacement therapy (hypothyroidism)

A

L-thyroxine & thyroxine are usually the most used in dogs and cats

triiodothyroxine is recommended for dogs who can’t convert T4 to T3, must monitor when using the meds for the first 2 weeks

antithyroid drugs

A

Thionamide drugs: thiamazole & carbimazole

  • inactive until converted
  • MOA is to inhibit thyroid peroxidase reactions and inhibit the conversion of T4 to T3
