an epithelium-lined cyst found along the course of descent of the thyroid gland

aetiology of thyroglossal cyst
A
• The thyroglossal duct is an embryonic remnant of the path of descent of the thyroid gland from the mouth down

epidemiology?
A
presents in children and adolescents
before 20 years old

symptoms and signs of thyroglossal cysts?
A
- asymptomatic swelling
- painful with infection
- midline on anterior of neck
- between the thyroid notch and the hyoid bone
- moved upwards on swallowing and protrusion of the tongue

what is a good investigation?
A
• USS

Q
what will be seen on USS?
A
o Thin walled and anechoic on USS
o Echogenicity suggests infection of the cyst

Q
what should a thyroglossal cyst be differentiated from?
A
lingual thyroid
- removal of this will cause hypothyroidism
