Thursday... Flashcards
Looking for a specific disease that is in a pre-symptomatic state
screening
Ex: performing a mammogram when breast cancer is suspected
diagnostic testing
If you are going to screen for a disease it should be (blank)
serious
**cause significant morbidity and mortality
Is early detection really beneficial?
it’s hard to say; could you help the patient more now than you could if you just waited for symptoms?
This should be considered when deciding whether or not to screen for a disease
epidemiology
**more prevalent diseases more likely to be screened for
Screening for rare diseases leads to (blank) results
false positive
You need to consider whether or not (blank) is available upon positive screening
treatment
Would you rather a screening test be very sensitive or very specific?
sensitive
**you want to be able to pick up all chances, and then you can do a confirmatory test to weed out false positives
What are the things we currently screen for?

screen men and women age 50-75 via colonoscopy
