Thrombosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is post thrombotic syndrome?
A
Pressure increases behind the thromboembolism and results in skin changes and ulceration
2
Q
What are the three main anticoagulant reactions that prevent clotting from becoming extreme?
A
- Anti-thrombin and heparins act to block thrombin and prevent fibrin formation
- Protain C makes sure the clot stays in the site of the injury. Protein C is cleaved by thrombomudulin which is at the site of endothelial damage. If the clot moves away then protein C is uninhibited.
- Fibrinolysis breaks down the clot when the vessel has healed
3
Q
What is bernard-soulier syndrome and glanzmanns thrombasthenia?
A
Bernard-soulier is deficiency of GPIb
Glanzmanns thrombasthenia is deficiency of GPIIb/IIIa
4
Q
What are haemophilia A and B?
A
The most common clotting factor disorders
Haemophilia A is FVIII deficiency
Haemophilia B is FIX deficiency
5
Q
What clotting factors does the APTT look at?
A
APTT test evaluates the intrinsic and common pathways – Factors VIII, IX, XI, XII.
6
Q
How can warfarin overdose be corrected?
A
With vitamin K
