Q

What are the three main anticoagulant reactions that prevent clotting from becoming extreme?

A
  • Anti-thrombin and heparins act to block thrombin and prevent fibrin formation
  • Protain C makes sure the clot stays in the site of the injury. Protein C is cleaved by thrombomudulin which is at the site of endothelial damage. If the clot moves away then protein C is uninhibited.
  • Fibrinolysis breaks down the clot when the vessel has healed
