Thrombosis Flashcards
What is Virchow’s triad of risk factors for developing a clot?
Stasis
Hypercoagulability
Vessel wall injury
What is a thrombus?
A solid mass that forms in the circulation from the constituents of blood
Made up of aggregated platelets and a mesh of cross-linked fibrin
What is an embolus?
A fragment of a thrombus that has broken off into the circulation and is travelling to different parts of the body
What 2 types of thrombi can you get?
Arterial
Venous
Where do arterial thrombi most often form?
Usually the result of atheroma
Atheroma forms most often in areas of turbulent blood flow, like a bifurcation of an artery
Explain how arterial thrombi form?
An atheroma is on the vessel wall
Platelets adhere to the damaged endothelium, and aggregate
