Thrombophilia Flashcards
What is thrombophilia?
Inherited or acquired coagulopathy that predisposes people to thrombosis
What are the symptoms of thrombophilia?
Normally find out that you have thrombophilia after having a blood clot
- Stroke at young age
- Repeated miscarriages
- Pregnancy problems
- MI
When does screening for thrombophilia occur?
- After having DVT or PE
- After pregnancy
- Have to be off anticoagulants for 3 weeks +
What are the most common inherited thrombophilias?
Factor V Leiden
Protein C deficiency
Protein S deficiency
Antithrombin deficiency
What is the most common autoimmune thrombophilia?
Antiphospholipid/Hughes’ syndrome
What happens in Factor V Leiden thrombophilia?
Gene affects factor V which makes it not able to be broken down by protein C
- This prolongs the clotting process
Is the risk of blood clots the same for all patients with Protein C or S deficiency?
Risk of blood clot forming varies between families as each family has a different alteration in the PC or PS gene.
What happens in antithrombin deficiency?
Antithrombin cannot effectively inhibit thrombin
What is the usual treatment for thrombophilia?
- Low-dose aspirin
- Anticoagulants
