Thrombocytosis Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two type of thrombocytosis
A
Thrombocytosis is categorized as either:
- primary thrombocytosis: a rare myeloproliferative neoplasia
- secondary or reactive thrombocytosis
2
Q
What is the pathomechanism for secondary thrombocytosis
A
The number of circulating peripheral platelets is increased either by redistribution or through incresaed production secondary to an underlying disease process:
- physiologic conditions causing an increase in catecholamines can result in thrombocytosis (e.g., stress, anxiety)
- non-neoplasic inflammatory disease is the most common cause (GI disease seems the most commonly diagnosed condition) - multicentric lymphoma and gastrointestinal lymphoma were more commonly diagnosed in cats with thrombocytosis in one study - hepatobiliary diseases - liver is the primary site of thrombopoietin synthesis - it is possible that chronic hepatobiliary disease could lead to an increase in thrombopoietin production - immune-mediated diseases
