Thrombocytopenia in pregnancy Flashcards
The normal serum level of platelets in pregnancy is
150-400 *10`9/L
mild thrombocytopenia level
> 100*10`9/L
moderate thrombocytopenia level
50-100*10`9/L
severe thrombocytopenia level
<50*10`9/L
Causes of low platelet count
- Increase destruction or consumption
- dilution effect
- lack of production of platelets
Common signs of thrombocytopenia include
petechiae,
nose bleeding
more rarely, haematuria and gastrointestinal bleeding.
platelets count at late pregenancy
lower 10% than pre pregnancy levels
d.t. combination of dilutional effects and acceleration of platelet destruction across the placenta
Thrombocytopenia prevalenve
8-10% of pregnancies
75% of them d.t. benign process of gestational thrombocytopenia
What to do with platelets counts > 100*10`9/L and are stable
do not require further investigation but should be monitored.
platelet count in gestational thrombocytopenia
typically >70
usually >100
no bleeding risk for mother or fetus
