Three Ways To Represent Slope Flashcards
What is some information regarding slope - intercept form?
A line with the equation y = mx + b has a slope m and y = intercept b
When x = 0 then y = b, so b is the y - intercept AND when x = 1 then y = m + b
Plug the x and y coordinates given and the slope in order to solve for the y - intercept. The final form is y = mx + b
What is point - slope form and what is the formula?
An equation of the line that passes through the point (x1 , y1 ) and has a slope m (assuming the line is nonvertical): y - y1 = m ( x - x1 )
This is a great formula to use when given point and a slope. The steps are;
- Find slope of the line if it is not given
- Calculate the y - intercept by substituting a given point into y = mx + b AND then solve for b OR substitute point and slope into point - slope form.
What is the standard form for slope?
The graph of an equation can be written in the form Ax + By = C
Where A and B are not both zeros, is a line
If A or B is greater than 0 then is is a line, if not then it is nothing
