UTAC 42D is the primary UTAC Channel for NYC region.

D- stands for DIRECT (or Talkaround) it is for point to point communication.

UTAC repeater channels may be useful at operation encompassing a vast area (ie across Hudson to communicate with NJ). How is the repeater activated?

A

Request is made by the IC via channel UCALL 40 TO NYCEM. IF unable to contact NYCEM request via Dispatch.
Any request outside of NYC would go thru command at incident.
UTAC repeater channels are intended for outside operations.
When transmitting wait 2 seconds after PTT before speaking.

NYMAC channels are used for Command and Control not for tactical operation. IC is able to communicate with PD and other agencies using these channels through out the tristate area. Multiple radios can access this. HT, UHF mobile (BC and DC vehicles), Post Radio, DARS, Vertex.

What is the designation of the channels ?

A

NYMAC 1 NYC Call in Channel (alway active) When there is a need to communicate with NYPD via NYMAC call on this channel to request you will either be directed to stay on 1 or switch to a designated channel. (2 or 3) There is mention of use for inter operative at AIRPORTS.
NYMAC 2-3 are also designated for NYC

NYMAC 4 Nassau/Suffolk Call Channel (always active)
NYMAC 5-6 are also designated Nassau/Suffolk

17
Q

NYMAC channel will be designated without FDNY request when?

A
  1. 2nd Alarm or greater

2. Preplanned events ie Parades, new years…(John Heaney types of things)

18
Q

Some other stuff about NYMAC

A
  • When Communication Engine is on scene they will confer with the IC and FCU to determine if a NYMAC has been established. If not they will establish.
  • This channel if established needs to be monitored if Communications Engine is on scene they could assume this.
  • If NYPD wants use they will go thru FDOC and request. Once FDNY is on channel they will announce presence.
  • Use plain speak
19
Q

NYMAC CHANNELS ON HT: Again New HT doesn’t necessarily match with channels as designated.

A
C-5 NYMAC1
C-6 NYMAC2
C-7 NYMAC3
C-8 NYMAC4
C-9 NYMAC5
C-10 NYMAC6
20
Q

Vertex VX 800 portable I/0 HT. Never seen it never used it not sure if they’ll go here. I think B13 used to use it to communicate with PA on GWB.
10 channels only 8 in use.

A

CH 1-6 transmit at 2watts and correspond accordingly with NYMAC channels

CH 9 EMS/Fire 5 watts
CH 10 PD TAC “U” 5 watts

21
Q

Post Radio transmits at 45w. It is charged weekly and after each use for at least 8 hours. Prolonged usage may require up to 20 hours for full charge. Members shall not be with in 2 ft for a transmitting post radio.

How long can it operate?

A

4 hours of operation if 20/20/60

as the battery drains the wattage will decrease.

22
Q

Cross band repeater has two main components. The first is the cross band repeater the second is two linked radios one is High wattage (40 w) UHF the other is Low wattage (5w) VHF. Can never be used solely as VHF.

What are the steps to use repeater?

A
  1. Notify Dispatch
  2. Depress power button (upper left side)
  3. Depress YELLOW VRS button
  4. check display for “self chk” (after this it will alternate between “VRS Both” and channel which is usually 2)
  5. Remove VHF HT from charger (yellow knob and long antenna, 8 channels, orange emergency button disabled)
  6. Turn VHF HT on depress PTT “test, test”. Red light should illuminate showing that it is going thru the repeater. Short double tone at end of transmissions
  7. At conclusion both power and VRS buttons must be turned off.
23
Q

Some random points about the Cross Band repeater

A
  • Only BC who activated their CBR will being their VHF radio to the ICP.
  • Both VHF and CBR must be on same channel. Changing channel on VHF will change ch on the CBR.
  • Only one vehicle repeater may be used citywide. If awaiting a second Post radio you may use the vehicle radio but don’t activate the VRS button. Battalion FF will act as the repeater with own HT instead of the VHF.
  • For optimal coverage use park vehicle across the street.
24
Q

Some random Post Radio Points

A
  • All BC shall report into Lobby with Post Radio
  • Can only be used to transmit on Tactical Channel in emergency
  • If a BC is assigned “Attack Chief” Post radio can be left at fire sector and set to Tactical Channel. The antenna on the Post Radio is better equipped to receive transmissions.
25
Q

A
  • Can be used if post radio fails
  • 40w
  • Can be used for emergency transmissions
  • Channels 16 HT, NYMAC, EMS, TAC “U” TAC “G”
