[85% of cats underwent medical management]
Klainbart, JFMS 2022
Dog bite wounds in cats: a retrospective study of 72 cases
-What blood parameters were different in non-survivors when compared to survivors?
-What other factors resulted in a reduced likelihood of survival?
Total protein and albumin were significantly lower
ALT significantly higher
in non-survivors compared with survivors
Cats with more severe, more areas injured and cats undergoing more aggressive treatments were significantly less likely to survive (P = 0.029).
Frykfors, JFMS 2020
Thoracic dog bite wounds in cats: a retrospective study of 22 cases (2005–2015)
-what factor was associated with presence of a penetrating wound and likelihood of having surgery
-⩾3 radiographic lesions was associated with the presence of a penetrating wound (P = 0.025) and with having thoracic exploration (P = 0.025)
Overall mortality rate was 27%.
Mayhew, JAVMA 2022
Resolution, recurrence, and chyle redistribution after thoracic duct ligation with or without pericardiectomy in dogs with naturally occurring idiopathic chylothorax
-what were the resolution rates for TDL alone and TDL/pericardiectomy?
resolution rates for TDL was 94% and 88% for TDL/pericardiectomy
abstract conclusion:
In dogs without evidence of CPP, TDL alone was associated with a very good prognosis for treatment of IC. In the absence of Constrictive Pericardial Physiology, the additional benefit of pericardiectomy in the treatment of IC is questionable.
Dickson, JAVMA 2021
Surgical management and outcome of dogs with primary spontaneous pneumothorax: 110 cases (2009–2019)
-which lung lobe were bullous lesions most commonly seen in?
-what % had recurrence of pneumothorax?
-what was median time to recurrence
Left cranial lung lobe
13% had recurrence
median time to recurrence was 9 days
Price, vet surg 2024
Evaluation of thoracic duct ligation and unilateral subphrenic pericardiectomy via a left fourth intercostal approach in normal canine cadavers
what was the supposed benefit to the 4th intercostal space?
Imaging: lymphangiograms revealed a single TD in 10/13 clinical cases at the fourth intercostal space. Three cases had additional branches.
Sx: Thoracic duct ligation via a left fourth intercostal thoracotomy was successful in nine out of 10 cadavers. A single branch was noted intraoperatively in six out of 10, and two branches were noted in four out of 10 cadavers. All branches were observed on the left side of the esophagus.
