True (vertebrocostal) ribs
1-7, attach directly to sternum
False (vertebrochondral) ribs
8-10, connect to sternum indirectly
Floating (vertebral, free) ribs
11 and 12, do not connect

3-9. Have head with superior and and inferior facets, neck, tubercle, shaft
1st rib (atypical)
Broadest, shortest, and sharply curved, with single facet on its head, and has scalene tubercle that separates the subclavian vein and artery
2nd rib (atypical)
Thinner, has two facets for articulating with T1 and T2 bodies and has tubercle for muscle attachment
10th rib (atypical)
Only has one facet like the first rib
11th and 12th rib (atypical)
Have only one facet on their heads and are short with no necks or tubercles
