Q

What are the borders of the Superior Mediastinum?

A

Borders

Superior– An oblique plane extending from the jugular notch of the manubrium of sternum to the superior border of T1 vertebra

Inferior– Imaginary horizontal line (Transverse thoracic plane) running from the Sternal angle of Louis at the manubriosternal joint to the Intervertebral disc at the junction of T4 and T5 vertebrae. It is continuous with the inferior mediastinum at the level of the sternal angle.

Anterior– Posterior surface of Manubrium of the sternum.

Posterior– Anterior surface of Vertebral bodies of T1-4.

Lateral– Pleurae of the lungs.
