what is the thorax?
the region of the trunk that includes: costal cartilage, ribs, sternum, thoracic vertebrae, and the structures they enclose
where is the superior thoracic aperture?
at the root of the neck and in continuity with the neck
where is the inferior thoracic aperture?
closed by the diaphragm
what are the 3 compartments of the thorax?
left and right pleural cavities and mediastinum
what major vessels come from the heart?
vanae cavae, aorta, pulmonary trunk & main branches, and pulmonary veins
what is the structure of the diaphragm?
musculotendinous
where do the muscle fibres of the thorax arise and converge?
radially from costal margins and insert into central tendon
which side is the dome shaped diaphragm higher?
right, due to presence of liver
what kind of muscle is the diaphragm?
skeletal
what nerve supplies the diaphragm?
phrenic, C3-5, contains motor and sensory fibres
what happens to the diaphragm on inspiration?
it flattens to increase capacity of thoracic cavity
