THORAX Flashcards
Typical Ribs
Ribs 3 - 9
Superior and inferior facets, with a crest in between
Weak posterolateral bend
Head, Neck (Narrow and flat), Tubercle, Costal angle (lateral attachment to Iliocostalis muscle) and groove
Costovertebral joint with vertebral bodies
Costotransverse joint with vertebral transverse processes
Ribs 4 - 9 are frequently fractured
Atypical Ribs
Ribs 1, 2, 10, 11, 12
Typical Ribs CLINICAL
Typically used for autologous bone grafts
Rib 1
Wide and flat, 60 deg with the horizontal
1 articular facet for T1 vertebra on head
Tubercle and costal angle are in same plane
Grooves for subclavian vessels, serratus anterior muscle, scalene anterior and scalene medius muscles
Forms a boundary to scalene triangle
Rib 2
Has tuberosity for serratus anterior and scalene posterior muscle attachments
Rib 10
No attachment to sternum
1 articular facet
Rib 11
No attachment to sternum
No neck
No tubercle
1 articular facet
Rib 12
No neck or tubercle
1 articular facet
Forms boundary to superior lumbar triangle and renal angle
Special costal triangle
Lateral border: Levatores costarum
Medial border: Inter-transverse ligament
Inferior border: Lateral costo-transverse ligament
Dorsal rami of spinal nerve goes through it.
Costo-Vertebral Joint
2 demi-facets on vertebral body which articulate with the head of the same rib (superior facet) and the head of an inferior rib (inferior facet)
